Are There Any Items Prohibited for Sale through Clover Online?

Credit card brand rules prohibit certain online activities, listed below. Clover Online did not create these rules.  They were carefully made and are enforced by card brands and sponsoring banks.  Because of those rules, if your store falls within one of these categories, your account may be suspended or terminated.

  • 1031 exchange companies
  • Advance payments greater than 1 year (any product or service)
  • Aircraft financing
  • Airlines
  • All sexually oriented or pornographic merchants
    • Adult book stores, video stores,  toys
    • Adult websites and content
    • Adult entertainment (misc)
    • Audio (phone sex adult phone conversations)
    • Companion/escort services
    • Dating services (sexually oriented)
    • Fetish products
    • Massage parlors (sexually oriented)
    • Prostitution
    • Gentleman’s clubs, topless bars and strip clubs
    • Membership, clubs, subscriptions
    • Any products on the internet containing graphic or nude content
    • Illegal activity (e.g. child pornography, bestiality etc.)
    • Video (web-based sexually oriented video)
  • Any illegal products/services or any service providing peripheral support of illegal activities (e.g. drugs)
  • Bail Bondsmen
  • Bearer share entities
  • Bidding fee auctions (a/k/a penny auctions)
  • Business/Investment opportunities operating as “get-rich-quick” schemes,  
  • Buying Clubs/Shopping Service
  • Cash gifting
  • Cash advances (other than regulated financial institutions which are acceptable)
  • Cell phones/pagers (billing for services only)
  • Centralized Reservation Services
  • Chain letters
  • Charities without evidence/proof of 501 (c ) (3) or equivalent status
  • Check cashing
  • Collection agencies or firms involved in recovering/collecting past due receivables
  • Contests requiring the payment of a fee
  • Counterfeit goods/replicas
  • Credit card protection or identity theft service
  • Credit repair/credit restoration
  • Cruise lines
  • Currency exchange
  • Data Pass (merchants up-selling or cross selling products of other merchants and then sharing the cardholder data with the third party or receiving cardholder data from third parties)
  • Dating services
  • Debt/interest consolidation services or reduction services
  • Decryption and descrambler products  including mod chips
  • Door to Door sales
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Embassy, foreign consulate or other foreign governments
  • Entities engaged in the trading of mortgage backed securities
  • Essay mills/paper mills
  • Extended warranty companies
  • Fake references and other services / products that foster deception (including fake IDs and government documents)
  • Fantasy leagues with cash/prize payouts
  • File sharing services/cyberlockers
  • Flea markets (defined as firms/individuals operating from a booth, whether indoor or outdoor, with no lease or telephone availability)  OK for Clover Go
  • Foreclosure protection/guarantees (including “how to” guides”)
  • Fortune Tellers
  • Free gift, prize, sweepstakes or the winning of a contest as an inducement to purchase a product/service
  • Games of skill where participants receive cash or cash equivalents or prizes with/of material value (e.g. electronics, travel, gift cards etc.)
  • Gambling advice/sports forecasting or odds making
  • "Get rich quick schemes
  • Government grants
  • Hedge funds, and commodity brokers
  • "Illegal gambling including internet/MOTO gambling
  • Investment brokers
  • Issuer/seller/redeemer of money orders or traveler’s checks
  • IT services help desks
  • Jammers or devices that are designed to block, jam or interfere with cellular and personal communication devices/signals
  • Lifetime subscriptions/membership (any product or service)
  • Lotteries and/or gambling including but not limited to lottery clubs, bingo parlors, casinos, online Poker and internet gambling
  • Mail order spouse/international match making services
  • Manufacturer and home seller of precious metal and stone jewelry
  • Marijuana, marijuana products, marijuana services and marijuana  related businesses
  • Medical discount benefit packages (including medical discount cards)
  • Merchants engaged in activity prohibited by the Card Brands
  • Merchants offering substantial rebates or special incentives (e.g., free gift, prize, sweepstakes, or contest) as an inducement to purchase products/services Merchants physically located outside of the U.S.  (offshore acquiring)
  • Merchants splitting sales across multiple transactions
  • Merchants that have ransom-like or extortion-like basis for their business model (e.g. mugshot removal)
  • Merchants that use tactics to evade Card Brand excessive chargeback or fraud monitoring programs
  • Merchants engaged in any form of deceptive marketing practices including but not limited to:
    • Hidden disclosures
    • Bogus claims & endorsements
    • Pre-checked opt in boxes
    • Refund/cancellation avoidance
    • Poorly disclosed negative options
  • Military arms and equipment financing
  • Money services business
  • Money transfer services
  • Mortgage/loan modification
  • Mortgage / credit / debt reduction /consulting services
  • Multi-level marketing or pyramid schemes where the primary objective is the solicitation of new distributors and not the sale of products/services
  • Negative renewal option following a free or low cost purchase (including pay for shipping only offers)
  • Nutraceuticals (e.g. acai berry, health related teas, herbal remedies or drinks etc)
  • Non-face-to-face sale of tobacco products (including e-cigarettes/smokeless cigarettes)
  • Non-face-to-face sale of prescription drug sales
  • Non-face-to-face sale of firearms (including Weapons, Gun parts or Ammunition)
  • Non-face-to-face sale of Alcohol
  • Non Medallion Taxis
  • Pawn shops
  • Payday loans and loan/lines originating from non FDIC insured banks
  • Political organizations, candidates, campaigns
  • Prepaid Phone cards
  • Products/services that promote hate, violence harassment or abuse
  • Provider or seller of prepaid access/stored value, including both open-loop and closed-loop exceeding $2,000 on any day.  (Closed-loop prepaid access includes gift cards, phone cards, subway cards, college campus cards, game cards and other limited-use prepaid access devices)
  • Pseudo-pharmaceuticals (e.g. weight-loss, diet pills, anti-aging pills, anti-wrinkle creams, teeth whitening products, muscle building, sexual stimulants supplements, male enhancement products, colon cleansers, detox products, glucose strips, hCG, HGH-like substances, etc.)
  • Quasi-cash
  • Real Estate Agents/Brokers involved in advanced deposits for vacation/beach/ski homes/cabins/cottages
  • Shippers/forwarding brokers
  • Shell Banks (defined as a bank without a physical presence in any country)
  • Social media “click farms” (e.g., the sale of clicks/likes/reviews/endorsements on social media)
  • Substances designed to mimic illegal drugs and/or other psychoactive products  (e.g., K2, salvia divinorum, nitrite inhalers, bath salts, synthetic cannabis, kratom, herbal smoking blends & herbal incense)
  • Telemarketing (outbound) travel merchants (MCC 5962) - including discount travel clubs, membership or subscriptions to travel services or newsletters where subscribers may select prepackaged trips.
  • Timeshare
  • Third Party Payment Processors/payment services companies (e.g. bill pay services, crowd funding, peer-to-peer payments, digital wallets, commissary accounts etc) Aggregators falling outside of MasterCard / Visa approved program requirements
  • Title loans
  • Travel agents/tour operators
  • Travel clubs
  • Virtual currency (that can be monetized, resold, converted, traded into physical/digital goods & services outside the virtual world)
  • Warranty services
